Fayoum

Fayoum with 2.4 million inhabitants in an area of 1,827 km².The oasis of Fayoum is about 1,270 km², and irrigated by the Yusuf Canal, first constructed 3,500 years ago, bringing in water from the Nile is the largest oasis in Egypt, it is situated 90 km South-West of Cairo. Its Qaroon Lake, which covers an area of 200 km², is ideal for fishing, duck shooting, rowing and swimming. In the fall, the ducks swam from the north seeking warm waters of the lake, where the shooting season lasts until spring.

The region is famous for fossils found in the desert. Shells of various sizes and skeletons of whales, sharks, crocodiles, giant turtles and large mammals have been discovered in the desert north of the lake. The water-wheels which characterize Fayoum from any other governorate. There are about 200 of them which are used to draw underground water and irrigate agricultural lands.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

1) The Pyramid of Pharaoh Amenemhat III, one of the kings of the XII Dynasty, that dates from the 19th century B.C. about 14 km; South-East of the city of Fayoum in th Hawara area.

2) The village of Illahoom where the Pyramid of Senousert II is situated, one of the kings of the XII Dynasty.
